Lab Rules
Note (19 November 2018). These lab rules are outdated by now. I am working on a new version.
Room Reservation:
If you wish to use the lab, even if you have a key to the lab, please send an email to L2psyling@gmail.com (or idarcy@indiana.edu) to schedule a reservation. In your email please mention what equipments you may need to use in the lab.
Please plan ahead and make reservations one week in advance.
Please be aware that the lab can only accommodate 3 or 4 people working on computers at the same time.
But for recording or running participants, only one person is permitted in a time slot.
Available time slots can be viewed at https://psycholinguistics.indiana.edu/calendar.htm . Your reservation will show on the calendar within 24 hours after you send the email.
If you don’t see your reservation on the calendar after 24 hours, please send an email to Chung-Lin Yang at cy1@indiana.edu . Please do not send duplicate reservation emails
to the lab email address.
You will receive a confirmation email after your reservation is completed.
If you don't have a key to the lab, after your reservation is confirmed, bring or send a copy of the confirmation email to Dr. Darcy to check out the key.
Please return the key to Dr. Darcy or lab assistant Chung-Lin Yang within 24 hours after you leave the lab.
Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES is it allowed to give the key to a third person.
Room Policies:
The lab is for people who are working on projects in psycholinguistics or speech,
especially dealing with second language research.
If others are working on projects, please practice common courtesy and limit talking
and phone calls.
You are not allowed to check out the lab key without permission from Lab Director,
Dr. Darcy or Lab Assistant, Chung-Lin Yang.
Only covered drinks and light meals (e.g. sandwich, snacks) are allowed in the lab,
but absolutely NO FOOD and DRINKS are allowed in the RECORDING BOOTH! Please also keep
your snacks or drinks away from recording equipments. If you want to boil water, you can do so (the boiler is on the shelf above the mirror), but
remember to rince your cup and empty the boiler from any remaining water before you leave.
If you encounter any problems with hardware or software, please send an email to the
lab director or assistant. Be sure to mention the computer name as shown on the front of
each machine, so that we know which machine you are talking about.
Please turn off the lights and A/C before leaving the room. Also remember to turn
off the light in the recording booth.
Leave the room in the state you would like to find it when you arrive:
put away papers, headphones, chairs, and turn off all equipment.
Computer and Equipments Policies:
Lab computers are for academic use.
Absolutely no gaming on all computers.
Do NOT leave your data on the machines without making a copy, for security reasons:
Always save data to your own removable storage device (e.g. a memory key) or your RFS account.
You may leave some data (within reason!) on the machines temporarily, but it is your responsibility to make sure you have a backup copy of your data.
Remember to log out (but don’t turn off) the machine when you leave the room. Turn off the monitors.
Do NOT plug or unplug any cables attached to the audio capture card and the computers.
Checking out portable equipments (e.g. portable recorders and laptops) is possible with permission from the lab director, and you are responsible for any physical damages on the equipments.
To use the Mac, log in the account “L2 Labphon”. The password is the name of the building where the lab is located in (all lowercase).
Printer Policies:
Printer is for printing out documents related to your research conducted in the lab only.
Please do not use the printer to print out the readings for your course work.
Please do not use the printer as duplicating machine. If you want multiple copies of a document, print one copy and then use a photocopy machine to make more copies.
Printing of manuals is limited to 10 pages for each software application. Certain software manuals have a large number of pages (e.g. E-Prime). Please do not print out the whole manual. If you need the whole manual for reference, please save a copy of the file to your own storage device. Some software (e.g. Adobe Audition) has a hardcopy manual. Please ask either the lab director or assistant for this information.
When you send a document to the printer, make sure you pick it up even if you no longer want it.
When you run out of paper, please ask lab director or assistant for refill.
